A very close friend of mine (childhood soccer coach) recently told me that he has stage 1 lung cancer. He's about 50 years old and a frequent smoker.

Can someone please give me survival rates of Lung Cancer Stage 1A?

And how do you cope with the fact that a very close friend has cancer?

At first I thought he'd be fine but in the last couple of days I've been down in the dumps and really upset

You don't believe in God but you still blame Him for taking someone away from you?
That logic is just retarded, no offense.

29%~ to survive 1 year, (33% at women), 7.8% (9.3% at women) and 4.9% (5.9% at women).
These are pure statistics, and they can be easily be wrong.

I know the hurt but if you don't believe in god why do you blame him? I was smart enough to figure out god doesn't exist at a young age. I was 8 when I thought deeper into this whole "God" shenanigan

Then .. He should keep doing that ...good luck bro

Thank you

Thanks for the stats, I hope it can be prevented fully. Long shot but I still have hope

no offense taken, but i was speaking as if there is a god. is he real or unreal? not fair for me to tell anyone, and to try and correct me when i was being hypothetical and consoling someone. no offense but that was retarded. also, actually posting the statistics, a bit tactless..

I'm sorry to hear that. Make sure to give him lots of support, as I expect he feels x10 worse than you do about the situation.

You said he's quite healthy and runs a lot, right? As long as he doesn't let it affect him and keeps exercising, he probably won't get many respiratory problems early on. :)

there's always a shot at survival. plus, it's lucky that he's in stage 1A because most of the times, surgery helps. I'm sure the doctor has mentioned that, right?

Let's hope so :)

Yeah the doctor did say there's a high survival chance but you never know with cancer. I don't want to lose hope but there's that bit in my heart that always doubts :'(

despite its high survival rate, it also has a rate where the cancer will come back. hopefully he will take a surgery and remove some of the parts related to the cancer and some which are affected with the cancer and hopefully he will regain his health. most of the time, the survival rate depend on the individuals form and the individuals own non-cancer related health. since he's a coach, there's a higher hope.
hope you'll find your smile and spend more time with him > exercise and healthy eating order + keeping him in good and calm mood helps also.

Copied from da interwebs:

The overall 5-year survival rate for stage 1 lung cancer at this time is 60% to 80%. Recent studies have shown survival rates in the range of 90% when stage 1 lung cancer is found with CT screening, and hopefully screening methods will be developed soon to improve early detection and overall survival.

You're welcome
