first off, it is never stated exactly how the rinnegan is obtained. Kishi leaves it to context clues so that the reader actually has to pay attention and come up with his own assumptions, that is until kishi actually states it word for word.

in this scan it shows madara and kabuto talking about what kabuto did to madaras body. BASED ON KABUTO AND OROCHIMARUS RESEARCH ON THE SHARINGAN/SO6P/Senju, KABUTO AND OROCHIMARU HYPOTHESIZED (based on context clues in which anybody can see how i came to this conclusion in this scan) THAT IMPLANTING HASHIRAMAS CELLS INTO MADARAS BODY, THE RINNEGAN WOULD MANIFEST ITSELF. THEY HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA THAT MADARA HAD UNLOCKED IT NEAR DEATH AND THAT HE WAS SECRETLY STILL ALIVE BECAUSE HE HAD HASHIRAMAS DNA, SO THE ONLY REASON THEY WOULD HAVE IMPLANTED HASHIRAMAS DNA INTO HIS BODY WOULD BE TO TEST IF THEIR THEORY WAS TRUE. caps so that u can read it clearly and know that you got sat down in all caps. please please please atleast have some dignity left and admit you may be wrong, im not saying you're 100% wrong because it was never actually stated in the manga, BUT an experienced reader knows that context clues are always in a story along with foreshadowing. just sayin bro...

EDIT : also id like to add that madara goes on to say "you did not create this power" BECAUSE madara had already implanted the cells of hashirama into himself before death, and kabuto thought he created the power just now by adding hashi's cells to him but infact madara had already done that in the past..... that is what is meant by "you did not create this power" now please tell me you see the logic in that.

DOUBLE EDIT: incase that wasnt enough, pay close attention to the middle panel of the bottom section, its a flashback of madara saying to him "i was able to get my hands on hashirama senju's cells, but even after transplanting them in my wound... nothing happened IN THE BEGINNING but when my life span was almost over i awakened the rinnegan

It takes a very long time for the Rinnegan to awaken. Madara gained his near the end of his lifespan. It is currently unknown as to why the Rinnegan takes such a long time to awaken in someone who is not a Senju. (Just an assumption that the time-span it takes to awaken is shorter in someone of the Senju lineage.) Even with Senju DNA, Madara's Rinnegan did not awaken until he was nearing the end of his lifespan. The reason why Madara didn't "Activate" it in his prime is because he couldn't; Unlike the Sharingan, the Rinnegan takes a long time frame in order for it to awaken. You cannot "activate" that which you do not have. If Madara could have forcibly awakened it in his prime, do you not think he would have done so? If this doesn't answer your question, perhaps you should elaborate on what you mean, and try asking Kishi as to why Madara didn't "Activate" the Rinnegan in his prime.

Given that it took so long to awaken rinnegan, there are 2 ways.
1. Senju blood isnt all there is needed and something else was missing.
2. We were mislead to believe senju blood is a must, while u can awaken rinnegan with just something else.
