All the Senju were probably like Gai and had a special way to fight Uchiha that doesn't involve eye contact so they can avoid their genjutsu. It's obvious they must have

the uchia's genjutsu requires eye contact at least tsukoyomi,...

But the senju are more then strong enough to fight without looking in to there eyes

HASHIRAMA WAS AS SKILLED IF NOT MORE SKILLED IN GENJUTSTU THAN MADARA.

Using a Genjutsu would be redundant on Madara's part because someone well-versed in it would know how to break it with ease.
