i thought about this too but when kakashi was fighting zabuza he passed out after having it active for maybe 15 mins and he could barely walk for 2 days so i guess he barely had the strenth to activate MS

This isn't really a plot hole....Perhaps he just didn't know how to use it yet? When he first unlocked it, he was pretty young and he passed out right after he unlocked it. When he woke up obviously his mangekyo wasn't activated anymore and he probably didn't know how to reactivate it or that he even had it.

It's possible during the time-skip he came across information regarding the mangekyo sharingan, and discovered he actually was able to use it. Either that or was put in a situation where he re-discovered it out of necessity. It's not really that big of a stretch

Kakashi discovered his MS after Itachi used Tsukuyomi on him. He basically learned how to activate it from Itachi with his copy-ninjaness.

I think he simply didn't know he awakened it back then and since he is a non-Uchiha he had difficulties to handle it like we've seen in the FB. I mean just Sharingan seems to be a great burden for him in part1. I think it's by mastering Sharingan and being able to use it with limited chakra that he somehow was able to unlock MS again. What i never understood though is how can he turn his Sharingan to MS, but is incapable to activate or stop Sharingan. I think it's BS tbh
