When a cat eats that persons soul it looks like the souls off of soul eater. Its hard to explain and yes they originally start with nine, but they eat the Fre collector's souls to make them selves live longer or stronger depending on if it was a male or female soul that was killed of the werecat killed by the Fre collector)
