Similar to what was said before me, I believe that Kamui basically warps the fabric of space and time. It's not exactly breaking each body part off, it's simply "twisting" it into the other dimension. This of course brings up the question of why Obito can't grab anyone when they phase through him. He is sending only the parts of his body that is overlapping with something else so he should be able to grab someone as they phase through him. This can't be answered by saying his kamui has basically only "on" and "off" with no in between. If that was true, well we wouldn't see him at all when he warps himself and gravity would pull him down immediately. Of course now that brings up the question of why Obito is not currently at the center of the earth...

EDIT: scratch the gravity part he would unaffected by gravity in his phase shift form.
Also, for people saying don't question the logic of Naruto; Magic A is Magic A, I got no problem with that, but when Magic A suddenly becomes Magic B is when I have a problem and call it out.

i think u may have mixed up with others mangga.. with a character that can kill his enemy by teleporting half of their body into others dimension.. but, in obito case i think is different.. because if by kamui something will resulting a body damaged or killed someone.. wouldn't it will be obito strongest weapons.. he eventually can killed hid enemy just by kamui their head instead of sucking the entire body.. this kamui is totally different with others space time jutsu or dimension bender ...

maybe obito kamui is more likely to change some parts as transparent...hahah
