On Friday at a National Geographic-sponsored TEDx conference, scientists met in Washington, D.C. to discuss which animals we should bring back from extinction. They also discussed the how, why, and ethics of doing so. They called it "de-extinction."

There are a few guidelines for which ancient species are considered, and sadly, dinosaurs are so long dead they aren't in the picture. Their DNA has long ago degraded, so researchers are fairly sure that Jurassic Park will never happen.

They chose the animals using the following criteria: Are the species desirable — do they hold an important ecological function or are they beloved by humans? Are the species practical choices — do we have access to tissue that could give us good quality DNA samples or germ cells to reproduce the species? And are they able to be reintroduced to the wild — are the habitats in which they live available and do we know why they went extinct in the first place?

This still leaves plenty of other animals on the table. The list of candidates is actually pretty long, considering. The cost of de-extinction varies by species but projects could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. Then there's also the cost of housing the animals once they are created, and re-introducing them into the wild and protecting them from poachers once they are there.

But, if you were the zoo that had that one Woolly mammoth or saber-toothed cat, these costs just might be worth it.

Here are 10 animals they are hoping to one day resurrect.

Do you think this is ethical or not is the question of the day.

there's no real ethical question here unless you're overly religious and against man playing God

Animals don't have souls.
/thread.

Neither would humans then, are where exactly during evolution did we attain a soul?

We have a higher form of consciousness animals do not posses, cognitive capabilities providing us a possibility to utter nonsense to control others by vague concepts, such as soul, hell, and eternal damnation...

Not saying we don't posses something which can be defined as our essence, but if we have it, so do animals.

OT: we should preserve. And do that a lot better then bringing back the dead.

animals don't have souls...? damn, you people should just be quiet in such threads...

On topic: I think, as long as you don't recklessly release them into the wild, there is no problem to it. Of corse they should not just kill it again, or hurt it unnecessary.

ill argue with god too...tell him to call me. oh wait. lol
i just wonder what the purpose would be bringing these animals back. and instead of focusing on bringing BACK things i think we should focus on saving things.
wtf good can come from a saber tooth tiger?? like wut.
there are people starving all around the world and here we are spending money on freakin' bringing back animals.

I red an article that the scientist are searching for a way to bring the dinosaurs back trough chickens exactly chickens
Because they are the descendants of the dinosaurs by manipulating their dna structure and turn it back with complex processes to its origin form it is possible to create dinosaur eggs they are searching and studying it
So it will be possible to bring the dinos back one day
And i think its a great step for the sciense

Alright me being the person I am and wanting to get into the field of Paleontology, I would love to be able to actually see these animals alive and with my own eyes.......but please have any of them seen Jurassic Park!? That is a prime example than man should not play god with what is extinct, no good can come of this by any means. Also if they were to re-create them and keep them captive that would be playing against why they would be bringing them back. Animals act completely different inside captivity than what they would in the wild, and completely free of the human hand....until poachers found them.....But still you cannot control such animals (especially ones like the Saber-Tooth, that's like trying to put reigns on Raptors...and we all know how well that worked out).

I will just gladly wait until we can actually travel back in time then I will see them with my own eyes :p

I don't think Edo-tensei is ethical even in the Manga, if you read what Tobirama and Orochimaru both confirmed:
Edo-tensei shouldn't have excisted!

btw: animals have 'a soul', they feel pain, joy, anger, remorse.
