Hashirama would have never killed himself for Madara's sake. That would've been an extremely selfish act. Hashirama was well aware of how much the world needed him and his ideology, so why on Earth would he rid the world of his very own existence for Madara's sake?

i am obviosly talking about later on around the time when he fought madara at the waterfall long after he created the leaf....The mystery behind his death will be revealed soon and it seems that kishi implied he made a huge sacrifice when he said ITACHI was a greater shinobi than himself, when they told him what itachi did to foster peace.
