First of all before I get into this thread I want to give credit to FishBreast (interesting choice of name) because something he said was the catalyst that sparked me to make this thread. I will post the link to his thread at the bottom of the page.

Anyway, lets move on. Not too long ago I made a thread about the Juubi. I explained why I thought it wasn't evil, and how it was just acting as it naturally should. If you want to read the thread, the link is below. But, while I was sure I had figured out the Juubi, I couldn't grasp why the Sage split it up into the 9 beasts and let them roam free, until finally I think I have arrived at an answer.

Explanation of Juubi thread

In order to explain the Tailed Beasts I first have to explain what I think about the Juubi. If you did not read the thread I made about the Juubi, here is a brief summary.

Summary:
The Juubi is nothing more than Nature personified. During the Sage's time, war ravaged the land and Nature did what it would naturally due and stepped in. In order to protect itself from the wrath of Man it manifested into the 10 tails. The Sage knew what the Juubi was and what it intended to do (whipe out man to protect itself). However, he felt that Man just needed more time to live in harmony with eachother and by extention with the land. So, buying time for mankind, he sealed the Juubi, knowing that someday it would be pieced back together, and by that time man would have learned to cease the constant wars and bloodshed.

Okay, with this in mind, I still couldn't figure out why the tailed beasts were necessary to the Sage's plans. That is until I did some research. I have always been fascinated with numerology, in fact I adopted my dog because he was 11 months and 11 days old when I met him and my birthday is November 11th, but I digress. Because of my interest, I started with the 9 tailed beasts. "Why nine of them? Why not Six, as that would parallel the Sage quite nicely." I asked myself. I am sure there are multiple reasons, but when I researched the number 9 I came upon this...

Numerology:
Number 9- Global Awareness

The last of the cardinal numbers, the 9 is the most worldly and sophisticated of all numbers. The 9 has some similarities with the 6. However, whereas the 6 as a symbol of motherly (or fatherly) love, giving its love and care to friends, family and the immediate community, the 9 offers it to the world at large; the 9, more than any other number, has global consciousness. Looking at the shape of the symbol is, as always, quite telling. The 9 is like the 6 upside down, a symbol of her offering sympathy and compassion to everyone; a reservoir of giving with a generous downward spout.

The 9 lives in the world and understands the connections between all of mankind. It is a humanitarian, and sees no real difference between its neighbor next door and the person living in a very different culture and environment on the other side of the world. The 9 is the least judgmental of all numbers, the most tolerant and the most conscious.

And I thought to myself, "Wow, this is really cool, but how does it fit into the story?"

But then I came across Fishbreat's thread and it slapped me right in the face.

The Theory:

If the Juubi really is just Nature personified, not good or evil, then Man would have to learn to live together with it eventually. The Sage's solution was just a "band-aid" until a true solution could be found. That true solution was the unification of all people and Nature and it is something we are seeing happening right now in the manga. The Sage knew the Juubi would be pieced back together some day, in fact he planned on it..

As we see here.

He even left instructions on how to do it.

So, would he hope that all people would just be holding hands in a big drum circle when the Juubi appeared? No, of couse not, he knew it would be a long process, but he planned for that as well. That is where the tailed beasts come in. He created NINE. The number that means GLOBAL AWARENESS. It symbolizes seeing every one of your neighbors as equal and treating them all as equals. It is a humanitarian number that understands the connections between all mankind. NINE is the most tolerant and most conscious of all the numbers.....1 is the loneliest :(

The nine beasts were created to LEARN about man. Watch Man grow and head in the right direction. That is why the Sage created them and spread them out. He wanted them to become GLOBALLY AWARE and see the connections between all of mankind, to look at them with compassion and sympathy realizing they are all equal.

And the reason he did this? Remember, he PLANNED on the Juubi being revived, he was counting on it. When the consciousness of all the Tailed Beasts are merged together in the Juubi, they will have seen all parts of the world, all types of different people and societies and will have a GLOBAL understanding of how mankind works, and hopefully, be able to live in sync with them.

FUN FACT ABOUT THE NUMBER NINE: If you multiply anything by the number 9 the sum of all of the digits, simplified down to a single digit, will equal 9.

Examples: 9x7= 72; 7+2=9

9x5=45; 4+5=9

9x111=999; 9+9+9=27; 2+7=9

9x11=99; 9+9=18; 1+8=9

There is nothing coincidental about the examples. Try it yourself!

Thanks again to Fishbreast, here is the link to his thread.

I think the simpler answer is that kishi started with the nine tailed fox from japanese mythology and said "**** it!" i'm making 1-8 too.

But the fact remains that you and this thread are amazing!

So do you think Naruto is that example of mankind's tendency to do good?

Again, as I said, there are probably multiple reasons, but I think nine is more than just a coincidence..

Absolutely, Naruto is the key. The conversation he had with the tailed beasts in that different realm is what ties this all together. Remember how surprised Son Goku was when Naruto saved him just to save him? He couldn't believe it. The beasts all agree, that there is good in Man, and they see it in Naruto. Naruto has already saved the world.

Do you think that Kurama might have some significance in this as the "Ninetails"? What are your thoughts on how all of this might unfold?

Also what about that one thread you said you'd make on the Shinigami's mask and it's connection to the Uchiha's Nakano Shrine?

I think 8 Tails and Kurama are going to be captured. Naruto has to show that he can be strong and lead without the nine tails. He said it best here..

He doesn't want to be the Kyuubi's host forever. All the tailed beasts must become one again so Nature can be put back into balance.

As far as the Shinigami mask, Derp covered pretty well on its relation to the Sage. I wanted to touch on some differernt aspects of it, but was waiting for some more information, namely this...

I was hoping Hashirama would talk about Mito and how and when she did this. Because I think it has pretty big ramifications, but he still hasnt said anything; although I still think he will.

What Mito was able to do with the Kyuubi is paramount to the Uzumaki heritage, so I am waiting anxiously to hear more about her, and I have no doubt we will.
