Just finished watching this, anyone else heard of it?

It's pretty obvious to most people what TLR is about. Pretty much ecchi comedy and randomness galore. First season didn't have as much fanservice as I expected though, it's definitely enough to be classified as an ecchi but I could hardly say it was extreme. From what I'm aware that changes later though, not sure if it'll be a good thing or bad thing but I guess I'll see.

So here's the basic idea of the story: You've got your typical nice guy protagonist who is quite awkward with his romance and gets into a lot of troublesome situations. There's a girl he likes, but weird stuff happens and he ends up being declared as the husband of an alien princess who happened to come to Earth. From there his life gets crazy and a lot of stupid but hilarious stuff happens. There are some nice dramatic moments and when more plot-oriented episodes actually take place, things do get pretty interesting so I had a fun time with that. Character development, while not amazingly stellar, isn't too bad either and it's done well enough that while I don't have any extreme attachment to the cast, I still have enough connection to the characters to enjoy their interactions and how they affect the story. For the most part though it's about the comedy and how outrageous the romance ends up being for the cast.

In any case, I had fun with this one and I have to see how the rest of it goes. I heard that first season was actually the worst part of the story so if that's true I guess I have lots to enjoy in the near future.

I was watching it, but stopped, because of lack of time. I was also watching HighSchool DxD, also haven't finished!!
Didn't read your while thread because don't want to see spoilers as I plan to watch all the episodes soon :D

Ah I see, well once you get to the rest it'll definitely be good, I had a fun time with what I've watched so far. Hopefully you can get to the rest of it in the near future.

How is Highschool DxD by the way? I've heard some good things about it but only a couple of my friends have seen it.

Hmmm.. I did watch first and, if I remember correctly, the second season.
About it being ecchi though, just reading the manga should be more than enough proof, what with that new version 'black/dark' something. I get the feeling they're really challenging the law with TLR at times~

Then there's, regarding the anime, always the TV and the DVD versions.
I've noticed the DVD versions are supposed to be the extreme ones, uncensored sort of, so watching the TV version wasn't that bad, it's the one you almost always get to see on streaming sites. It was a bit enjoyable from time to time, but in my honest opinion, not anything that great.
Why did I watch it? Well.. I had some time to kill?

I've come to somehow think that most of the harem labeled series fills me with pity nowadays, it's just sad somehow.

Yeah I've heard that Darkness is actually way more ecchi, and that makes sense since the first season (at least from what I downloaded) was a lot lower on the explicit content than I expected. I'm watching the OVAs now and they definitely bumped the fanservice up for those. And go figure, from what I've seen so far I'm not enjoying the OVAs as much as I did the TV series, contrary to so many reviews I've seen.

I haven't really gotten into the harem genre much, I think the only other harem I really enjoyed was Rosario+Vampire, and by that I mean the manga and not the anime. Rosario's best merits are not because of its harem aspect though, as a much more serious and plot-focused (particularly in season II) series it's an entirely different story from TLR. I'm still enjoying TLR for all it's worth though, a lot more character development and drama than I had anticipated. Going into it I honestly expected pointless fanservice throughout, and it seems like the OVAs are falling into my pre-watching expectations a lot more than first season did.

I haven't gotten into the manga, but I've actually heard a lot of good things about Darkness. Even though it's very fanservicey people seem to really like it as a story for whatever reason, hopefully the anime ends up being good.

Well that seems to be a general trend with a lot of series, but particularly with the harems. To be frank though it'd be really unrealistic to have some hardcore player who wants to have all the girls as the lead, not to mention he would be even more one-dimensional than the typical harem protagonist. To Rito's credit he's actually a decent, although quite wimpy and awkward, character that's actually likeable all things considered. Obviously he pales in comparison to many of the females of the series, but he's not a bad protagonist.

I for one like the variety in the cast though. There are a lot of personalities among the characters and the weird sci-fi type setting it establishes makes for a lot of wacky stuff that I found pretty amusing. It's no top tier series by any means but it's still pretty good fun, not sure how it compares to other harems though.

You've got it! I did actually enjoy Rosario because of its focus ons story(I read the manga). I feel that, if there isn't a good story or any much focus on it, it's kind of a waste of time for me. Today I wouldn't watch the TLR anime or read the manga, it's not just interesting to me.

Yeah if I had to choose between Rosario's manga and what I've seen of To LOVE-Ru I'd definitely prefer Rosario as well. I think TLR does well for what it is though since it knows what kind of series it's aiming to be. Not Rosario status since Rosario is much more plot and development oriented, but for me TLR still manages to be surprisingly enjoyable.

Oh it's not too bad, it actually does take up a fight against authorities if I remember correctly. There's something about a ban of erotic/ecchi stuff in manga/anime, which many consider oppressive, and I believe I read TLR is kind of like a vanguard there.

to love ru is actually pretty good. I read the manga, but figured that since there is no nudity in the To love ru-Trouble series, I wouldn't watch it.
I watch to love ru-darkness instead... more nudity... U_U

Highschool DxD is very good.... watch it.... you won't regret it.....

Oh wow, yeah I'd definitely say it's a shame if things were banned for content like that. There are series out there way more explicit than TLR (even the uncensored I'm sure), but some of those are really quite fantastic.

Berserk for example, it's not like it focuses ON sexual content, but I'd safely say I would keep it away from anyone who isn't prepared for what is arguably some of the most explicit material in anime and manga. Even then though it's got a fantastic story and really deep themes, just, obviously you wouldn't want kids to be reading that type of stuff. Age restrictions for something on THAT level make sense, but it's a sad thing when there are just overall bans on explicit content period. Censoring or banning altogether stories like that is really quite disappointing.

Yeah truth be told it seemed like the fanservice in the opening for season 1 was more than what was actually in a lot of the episodes. Season 2 definitely seems to have more fanservice but apparently I downloaded the censored version so a lot of that got dumbed down with the random light censorship and all. Even then though it doesn't seem that extreme yet, stuff like Yomeiro Choice is WAY more extreme than that, although my friend showed me a scene from the Darkness OVAs and THAT definitely seemed like borderline hentai material.

Surprisingly enough, I am enjoying the TLR series overall fanservice aside. The character development is pretty nice and there are some really sweet moments with the characters, particularly with Yui, Yami, and Mikan. There's definitely the ecchi factor but after watching it I found that I got more than I expected out of it. I know that Darkness has way more fanservice but hopefully it doesn't only increase the fanservice but that the quality is good too.

And yeah I've heard people say they liked the series so I should definitely check it out. Apparently it has an excellent light novel series so that might be a good read.
