Hashirama didn't break out of Edo tensei, he just resisted Oro's restraint.

I don't see why he would be alive forever, he will go back once the job is finished, or he may not see the battlefield...

He hasn't broken free because Orochimaru could never control him in the first place, after he has finished on the battlefield with the other Hokage, he'll probably just ask to be sealed, Orochimaru has no power, if Hashirama wanted to go to the battlefield, he could at any time, it's only his will to change Sasuke that is keeping him there.

Plot-wise I don't think Hashi could just be back forever. That would throw a wrench in Kishi's ability to actually end the story. Plus one of the most powerful shinobi of all time just walking around with immortality would be really annoying (kinda like Madara being alive now)
