Storm 3 upon release was getting a lot of negative criticism. The trailers looked fantastic and we were finally getting Madara, Nagato and the other edos playable but still the game didn't look....up to usual standards. Well I just finished the Storm 3 campaign yesterday and after some time with the online and such I have concluded that I was a total idiot for judging a game of my favourite franchise ever, to be bad. Here are some of the areas I was worried about:
1. Story
Both Ninja Storm 1 & 2 had an enormous amount of content to cover, Storm 2 had basically all of Shippuden up until the Pain arc. That's a LOT. I was worried that the game cuts out just as Madara is reanimated and so therefore covers a very little amount of manga. 2 little arcs and the first, less dramatic part of the war isn't much to base an entire story mode on.
Why I was wrong:
Storm 3 somehow makes the most out of it's limited content. The entire game isn't just '3 arcs', it transforms it into Naruto the War arc - The Game. Which made it all the more appealing, it starts with Tobi declaring war and then ends with Tobi losing the war. When you look at it that way it's not very thrown-together at all. And it also does a rather amazingly epic portrayal of the war, in some ways better than the manga itself. (Dat Madara fight)
2. Lack of New Characters & Movesets
Why I was wrong:
You look at the roster now and you can really feel like it has been updated. A lot of the original characters have had alterations or been given some new attacks but as a whole, kept basically the same models. As far as i'm concerned this is only a good thing. It shows that the characters are more or less perfectly balanced. Don't expect to see a totally new Tsunade moveset just yet when the existing one works fine. The characters they DID do it to all ended up well (TBB Naruto/Samehada Bee etc.) and with the new edo costumes, all of these changes and the Jinchuuriki- it really does feel like a lot of new characters have been added.
3. Being broken
When I saw the videos of instant awakenings and ring-outs I FREAKED. As if the online community need MORE ways to abuse the system- people will do anything it takes to win but Storm 3 did the best job it could to even this out. Instant awakenings are for the most part fair (except Flying Raijin and Nagato Cannon, f*ck that sh*t) and ringouts are actually a very nice, minor addition to the game. It takes genuine skill or luck to knock someone out of that ring so if you manage to actually do it, you deserve to win. (I've done it once with Bee, that was it) so it was nice to see that being handled maturely by Cyberconnect.
They've toned down Tsuchikage's jutsu, Gaara's sand shower, Hidan's support & many other little things- which adds to the diversity of the game. Anybody could use any supports they like now and not get punished for it when they're caught in Hidan's scythe for the 50th time or caught by Tenten's annoying tools AGAIN. This was nice and it showed that Cyberconnect DO listen. Masked Man though, anybody fixed that yet? Haven't fought one yet luckily.
4. Character Art
Even something as small as character art was enough excuse for me to tear this game a new one. From the trailers, they only showed the old character selection screen artwork back from Storm 2. They look so ugly in comparison to Generation's pictures. I was also wrong about this- they got new poses and looks in their War Costume. Silly me.
5. Living up to it's Predecessors
Every single Ninja Storm game so far has brought something revolutionary to the franchise, which is why they keep improving. Storm 2 brought in a free story to roam with amazing boss battles and cutscenes in what was (arguably) an even better telling of the story than the anime itself. Generations gave us the first HUGE character roster and also the near-perfect battle system and I was worried that Storm 3 wouldn't deliver and would be more of the same.
Storm 3 is exactly where the story mode needed to go. This game's advancements focused on the story mode. Instead of just walking around place to place with little dialogue boxes, now everything is cinematic and exciting- you feel involved in the storyline taking place around you. If you weren't impressed by the aniamtion of the Nine Tail Attack Prologue then you're lying to yourself. Storm 3 keeps the ball rolling.
Though despite this, a lot of people are still giving it complaints and criticisms. Each to their own opinion but I honestly have no idea what you were expecting and your demands all seem a little too high. This game is not my favourite of the Ninja Storm games but matches them in every way.

STORM 3'S FLAWS (no game is perfect)
- For some reason, the game will automatically substitute me out of an attack even when I dont press anything.
- Few characters such as Madara and Nagato are spammer's new favourites.
- Cutscene to Gameplay ratio IS a little high. Some corners can be cut in the storytelling. (Especially when the Raikage's aide took about 3 minutes to explain some teleport technique to me, thanks)
- SERIOUS lag in some major boss fights and online, the fight system just feels a little clunkier than it was in Generations?
- There was NO reason to not include the past Kage and various other Edos.
- Was it really so hard to make a Kakazu/Sasori/Chiyo/Kimimaro Edo Costume? Seriously?
- Story alterations provide satisfying and awesome ending but ambigious how they'll pick up Storm 4.
- Kabuto's fight is totally overlooked for little to no reason. Where did Itachi go? Why are there still edos out there? Storm-only players will never know.
