Before you read you will notice the thread is broken into 2 parts. Part 1 is where I lay the ground work for the my theory and Part 2 is a little more ground work and then the actual theory itself.
The Uchiha
The Senju
Mortal Enemies
Have Been Fighting for Generations
Both Find Importance in Love (Hmmm?)

Part 1: The Groundwork
So it is as Suigetsu said when talking about the Uchiha, "They can get along with the Senju. With that strong power of love or whatever."
And Tobirama gave his response. Explaining that the Uchiha's love is in fact TOO strong and that if it goes unchecked can cause them to spiral out of control into a world of hate and darkness.
For many of us, this was a startling revelation. But do you know why it was so surprising? What gave you the idea that the Senju cared about love and the Uchiha cared for power. I'll help you out...
Remember this...?
So the Senju's ancestor wanted peace through love while the Uchiha's ancestor wanted peace through power. BUT HOLD ON something's wrong now. Why does the Senju care more about love? We were just shown that the Uchiha care about love just as much if not MORE than the Senju.
So it is no longer safe to assume what we were originally told by Tobi.
In fact, I submit to you, the reader, that the only reason we bought into Tobi's explanation is because it came first, so it stuck in our heads. Had we been presented the information in the reverse order.
First: The Uchiha's love is too strong
Then: The Uchiha ancestor sought peace through power
We would think the opposite of how we do now...

This....
Senju=Love
Uchiha=Hate
....No longer makes sense

So this leaves us exactly where now?
Part 2: My Theory
Going back to Tobi's statement
The two things that no longer make sense are that..
1. The Elder Son sought Power, while the Younger Son sought Love.
2. The Elder son betrayed the Younger BECAUSE he was not named his successor (Without point number 1, this point can't really be true in the way it was presented to us. Ergo the Younger was not named the successor because of their views about love and power. I'll explain a little later if you don't quite understand.)
This brings me to my theory. And I use that word very literally because when it comes to the Sage's sons there is so little hard evidence to go by. But I will use what raw facts I know.
So if the Elder is the Uchiha's ancestor, we can assume he had the same "symptoms" his descendants had.
If we believe this, then the Elder son would not have become hostile towards his brother unless he experienced a great loss. Not some petty jealousy of being named his father's successor. When have we ever seen an Uchiha show such rage over jealousy? It is always with loss that they activate, "the mirrors eye".
Given what we know the only prominent death around that time... You guessed it.
But why? Why would this cause the Elder son to betray the Younger?
Well, lets take what we know about them
And what do we know about the descendants of the Sage's body and life force?
They have incredible healing properties.
So what does this mean....
My Theory.

The Sage of Six Paths' death.
But why? Why would this cause the Elder son to betray the Younger?
Well, lets take what we know about them
- The Elder was blessed with the Sage's eyes
- The Younger was blessed with the Sage's body and life force.
And what do we know about the descendants of the Sage's body and life force?

My Theory.
The Sage, growing old, was on his deathbed and had little time left, but the Elder son, with his intense love of his close ones, could not accept his father's death. He knew his brother, with his strong life force, had the ability to at least prolong his father's life, but he refused, not because he wanted his father to die, but because he understands the circle of life, unlike his irrational older brother (whose ancestors we see display that same irrational behavior). So, his father dies and the Elder blames the Younger for his death, believing the Younger had the power to save him. Thus entails, our true cycle of hatred. The true reasons for GENERATIONS of fighting. Not some useless quarrel of jealousy, but the different ideas of what LOVE truly is.
