There is a 4 year gap, but I had always assumed his long hair was from his time spent with Madara and he cut it sometime after Madara died... Apparently he had no consistency since he let it grow out long again for seemingly no reason. Not sure why he let it grow out again or if this is a subtle plothole / way for Kishi to throw us off of Tobito theories back in the day.

Yeah I realized that, but I'm really just curious why Kishi chose to have him grow it out again. When I first read the Obito+Madara chapters I assumed that was the explanation for his long hair, but apparently it isn't.

But Itachi really had no idea what Madara looked like except for the VOTE statue, which after so long could've looked nothing like the older Madara.
