If the same speed was applied to somebody using a kunai or something, it would get the exact same job done.
For instance:
When Sasuke did this, I couldn't help but think that a kunai could have done the exact same job without wasting chakra and having your hand stuck through someone's lung.
Now, I will say it has one benefit:
When facinf ultimate defenses like Gaara's, chidori makes sense; you need the extra power to penetrate the defenses and get to the enemy. But honestly, how often would someone find themselves against a defense like that?
