Upgrade to what? Overcomplicating things can make it worse. Look at youtube and facebook when they try to upgrade or drastically change things.

There used to be ads in the space available between two posts(the space where you guys add your signature) and on the homepage, but only visible to people in guest mode. The ads were probably removed because they don't need it anymore.

^ That is correct. There also used to be advertisements on the manga viewer. Which was viewable by both guests and members. Versuvio made a decision some time ago to reduce the use of advertisements to a minimum. He then used money from his own pocket to keep this site running. Premium was introduced to help alleviate the cost and to help support this ad-free site.
