Apology :This thread might seem a little biased to people from other countries. And I apologize for that. I am open to any opinion you might have.

Early 20th Century leaders:

There are literally 4 men in the early part of the 20th century that had the most power out of any man on this planet.
- Adolf Hitler
- Joseph Stalin
- Winston Churchill
- Franklin D. Roosevelt

These 4 men define the first half of the 20th century, do we not agree?

People will put Hitler and Stalin ahead of Roosevelt, because they brought their countries up from the depression and industrialized it. However, that does not automatically makes them a good leader.

Hitler betrayed the German people, by killing the Jews (Many jews were German). He came to power with oppression and force, and killing many on his way to power, in fact many people in germany (citizens) did not like him, but instead stood for Germany, and in the end of his life he betrayed the Nazi themselves, by committing suicide.

Stalin: We all probably know about Stalin.. under this man's 20,000,000 deaths occured of the USSR citizens. More then under Hitler's reign. Even the people of his own country did not like him that much, (besides the ones in power , because of him.)

Winston Churchill: This man was amazing, in fact he is said to be the reason Britain even had a chance in WW2. But even he was later removed from prime minister.

Comparing F.D.R to these leaders: Now seeing as that F.D.R was nor selected by a specific party solely or came to power by force.. but instead selected by the people.

Year Popular Votes Electoral Votes

1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt 22,809,638 , 472
Herbert C. Hoover 15,758,901 , 59

1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt 27,752,869 , 523
Alfred M. Landon 16,674,665 , 8

1940 Franklin D. Roosevelt 27,307,819 , 449
Wendell L. Willkie 22,321,018 , 82

1944 Franklin D. Roosevelt: 25,606,585 , 432
Thomas E. Dewey: 22,014,745 , 99

Seeing as that he was the popular choice throughout the country its suitable to say that many considered him to be the right kind of a leader. In the popularity votes the gap was 3million +, In the electoral votes.. 200+.
People call him a socialist, yet fail to understand what a "Socialism" is. He was a true democrat of the people. He supported the people, yet the people of today call him a Socialist.. why? Cause he did what the government's job is? Because he did what the president's job is?

For example, farmers who didn't have a bible in their house had a picture of FDR for hope. People now argue that it was WW2 that brought us out of the Great Depression, however they are truly deluded. It was F.D.R who really brought us out of the Great Depression. He prevented Anarchy, he kept the "Hope" up. Now some of you might say he didn't do anything about the rights of African-Americans... however your wrong he did plenty. But getting the country out of depression was more important.

So as far as I am concerned F.D.R is the greater man from the above men.

Second half of the 20th Century leaders:

No leader from the second half really meets the scope of those 4 men. Kennedy could'v been the man for the U.S , but sadly he was shot. There have been people like Nelson Mandela / Sant Jarnail Singh/Malcolm X/ and many more... But they have not been to the extent of F.D.R due to the simple fact they did not appeal to the masses like F.D.R did. And their roles as leaders is totally different.

If you can name leaders who match up to F.D.R from the second of the 20th century please do so.

Conclusion

So what do you think? Is he the greatest? all opinions are allowed =] Thank you for reading.

While FDR was a great man and a great president, your perspective is one-sided and hyperbolic.

Well u may be not far from the truth..... but your view is extremely one sided as the WW 1 & 2 is not actually as black and white as it is painted; There a few others were also part of 20th century and deserves mention, even though they didnt hold any actual power.

I only stated WW2, and only concerned with the leaders, not the country's. The leaders were pretty much black and white.

Gets shot, ignores the bullet and continues on with speech

While Roosevelt was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 14, 1912, a saloonkeeper named John Schrank shot him, but the bullet lodged in his chest only after penetrating his steel eyeglass case and passing through a thick (50 pages) single-folded copy of the speech he was carrying in his jacket.[68] Roosevelt, as an experienced hunter and anatomist, correctly concluded that since he was not coughing blood, the bullet had not completely penetrated the chest wall to his lung, and so declined suggestions he go to the hospital immediately. Instead, he delivered his scheduled speech with blood seeping into his shirt.[69] He spoke for 90 minutes. His opening comments to the gathered crowd were, "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose."

Well the leaders are reflected in the actions and state of their charge.... but what ever floats your vote. But old FDR really seems a great fellow among those four . . . .

Died in his sleep for not even death could kill him while he is awake. His political career never died, at the young age of 59 he volunteered to lead an infantry unit into the front lines of WWI.

He trust busted the largest monopolies ever known, forced people to label their food and tell what is in what you are eating, formed the national park system (So he could go hunting), built the Panama canal, Passed the Sherman Antitrust Act to maintain economic liberty, stopped a war between Japan and Russia.

His doctors said he wouldn't live past 20, he died at 60.

Hitler could arguably be the greatest of those that you listed...if not for the whole concentration camps ordeal.

" Trust the government? Heck, I'm in the government and I don't even trust it. You don't have to believe in your government to be a good American. You just have to believe in your country."

Not really. He funded Germany's recovery with the wealth he obtained from the Jews. Stealing from others to improve your economy isn't exactly revolutionary.
