I can't help but feel bad for Obito. If none of the events where he was crushed by a boulder or he saw Rin killed in front of him happen he would've been happier like in the first picture.

I think Obito has a link with Naruto from a writer's standpoint. For example Kakashi is the cool guy, like Sasuke. Rin is Sakura they're the only female as well as both of them being medic nin's. Naruto is like Obito, both are from a powerful clan. They possess a unique quality and they both admire a girl who doesn't feel the same way back. I believe Obito is a what would of happened if Naruto lost Sakura to Sasuke as in her life being taken.
