Naruto is contradicting himself

Okay, the last time naruto fought sasuke, he said when they fight they will die. But when he was talking to gaara during the war, he said he won't die till he becomes hokage. What is up with that?

Naruto also said that if he can't even save one friend, he doesn't consider himself worthy of being Hokage.
So if he fights Sasuke and they both die, he wouldn't have wanted to be Hokage anyway, because he wouldn't have felt that he'd do a good job because he couldn't save one friend.

Maybe he means it in metaphorical manner, as in their last battle will be the end all be all, because I doubt neither wants to kill the other.

Also it seemed contradictory when he said to Itachi not to worry as he'd take care of Sasuke....made it sound like death wasn't the plan. Though given the context the conversation had just been around it naturally could be

I think that he told Sasuke that if they fight they'll both die. Then he said if he dies (killed by Sasuke or anything else, maybe?), Sasuke will die too. And then with what he said to Gaara, he either thinks he'll be Hokage by the time Sasuke shows up to face him, or that he and Sasuke won't fight. But obviously they have to fight because the expectation has been set up that there will be an epic fight between them.

Not really, because Naruto wasn't referring to Neji when he said that. I'm sure Naruto didn't want Neji to die, but he wasn't trying to save Neji, because he wasn't expecting Neji to die like that. Plus...

I don't think Naruto was even talking about saving a friend's life when he said that. More like a friend's soul - because that's obviously the way in which Sasuke needs saving. Sasuke's not dying, he's lost and his "only goal lies in the darkness." That's what Naruto was talking about trying to save him from.

There is no contradiction here. Naruto believes that Sasuke hasn't gone all bad and that he can save him without killing him.

His words to Sasuke:

4. (to Sasuke): If we fight each other, we die.

were a warning to Sasuke about the consequence of him continuing on his path, but also a commitment to him that he will stick with him and not give up on him, no matter what. These words carry a message of hope to Sasuke rather than a threat.
