the flashbacks are to explain Hashirama's wood release

as we all know, hashirama is the only shinobi that can use mokuton. And as we've seen, it is most sought after by various characters for its sheer power and some was able to get it. I think Kishi's reason for using the flashbacks is to explain(later on) about how he became a possessor of such a unique kekkei genkai. No one after him seems to inherit it.

Knowing how he developed mokuton is irrelevant to the story. It's sufficient to know merely that he has it. They don't bother explaining how any kkg really came into place, other than the sharingan to a degree. You can just assume that it was a genetic mutation that wasn't passed down.

yeah they do..... but they're not the main predecessors since they got it injected into them. the fact that no one after hashirama naturally inherited this kekkei genkai makes him unique..... and I think kishi will go into that later on
