The same thing happened to Obito. It can never leave the body of an Uchiha unless he dies. Only two Uchiha's(Shisui and Itachi) were known to follow the opposing ideal, the 'Will of Fire' but there were consequences.

It was difficult for Shisui since the 'Curse of Hatred' was taking over his good side so the only way for him to escape this was thanks to Kishi for causing him to die. Itachi was left and he was now suppressing the 'Curse of Hatred' while trying to follow the 'Will of Fire' but even he was failing so he had to allow the 'Curse of Hatred' to take over but not entirely.

I respect Madara even more now cuz he is the one who introduced the Shinobi alliance. Madara is more boss than Hashirama, it's just sad that he got corrupted due to his loss of his brothers, which made him take the opposite brute force path.
