Why itachi wanted the spirit weapons?

Well i think the real reason itachi sought them out was to pass them to sasuke as he had planned to give sasuke his eyes before he even killed the clan, tbh i think the second itachi learned of ems, he decided to give sasuke his eyes and powered them up specifically for that reason. Also i think itachi wanted to make sure sasuke was stronger than oro, even the genjutsu battles itachi had with sasuke would prepare sasuke for the time oro tried to take over sasukes body.

Do you think itachi can really plan that far ahead?

Itachi's dead. That means his susanno is forever alone now. Sasuke has his own susanno. It seems very difficult to obtain the spirit weapons now that itachi's susanoo won't come back.
