he was until madara arrived,now his only relevance is will he ressurect madara via rinne tensei or not.
he did his job as a villain but right now i see the story headed towards him being killed by kakashi since he got a power-up from naruto,that means they can keep up with him,trust me the manga became easily predictible in this part,i can clearly see how the war will end.(until the next arc which is still the only mystery)

Kishi is trying to eliminate the geniuses from the show. Since he fired Neji from his job, I guess, the next genius will be Kakashi, Mifune.
After the Hokages arrive, I guess not everyone will take the side of the alliance. Hashirama will leave Madara in the hands of Naruto and Sasuke after watching their determination. He won't interfere much in the battle even if Madara pose a great threat to the alliance.
Madara is going to show Tobirama his place in power. Minato will be handling the emotional part. And Orochimaru will use Hiruzen like a Killer Sensei puppet. But genius like Orochimaru is not going to die soon since he got another chance.
