In Hiruzen's defense, it did take Orochimaru 500+ chapters to get his arms back. Maybe Hiruzen saved Jiraiya and Tsunade from a full power Orochimaru in their deadlock? Idk, but armless Oro much less dangerous than Oro with arms.

not really because Orochimaru would have gotten pwned either way. If Hiruzen hadnt died, Jiraiya wouldnt have gotten drugged kooking for Tsunade

It a tie, and Hiruzen didnt fail, he just wasnt strong enough to take oro fully, but he took his arms, AND both kages so oro couldnt attack while he was gone and win. its a tie because the user dies, but the receiver dies too, its a all out last resort justsu. self sacrifice
