I 've been wondering about that myself too.

I believe it is just an illusion like the ones Itachi uses with the crows but I may be completely wrong.

Edit: It appears to be a technique similar to the Body Flicker Technique

They're just shunshins, or body flickers.

It's the same when Gaara used sand in the same way.

it's the body flicker technique incorporated with katon (fire release) to make it look like they are burning away. alot like garaa with his sand when he just dissapears with sand swooshing everywhere.
