I don't think what the great toad said will really make any difference in the end , Kishi could just troll us and have them fight at the chunin exams and be done with it or give a cheesy explanation of how naruto defies all reason .
I think he will return or atleast turn good in the end , here is my reasoning and it really doesn't have to do with all the recent events , if sasuke dies at the end which will probably be battling naruto there are two conclusions the first is that naruto will die with him just like he said which will probably be the worst ending in manga history , it's a possibility but a bad one or naruto could kill sasuke and give up on being a shinobi since he can't forgive himself or it will be another kakkashi sad tale where he tries to pass on the will of fire to the new generation leaving behind all of his dreams .
now if sasuke stayed on the dark side , I don't see any future for naruto there , he will go after him or turn into another jiraya always regretting not saving his best friend and honestly if this were to happen it's the same as saying half of what naruto did was basically useless , I keep picturing naruto wandering around aimlessly searching for sasuke or peace , just look at jiraya he was basically the same as naruto , he always talked about being hokage , orochimaru left and turned dark and jiraya wouldn't even accept the role of hokage even though it was his long life dream .
so I think ultimately sasuke will return , everyone is going around on how sasuke deserves to die but I keep thinking about naruto's fate since it's connected to sasuke's and I don't think anyone wants to see naruto turn into another ordinary guy who at best will do some tasks now and then , train some kids and stand around talking to itachi's grave stone about how sorry he is .
besides this manga has had so much sorrow , kishi seems to be holding on to the idea that if he wants to make the readers emotional he has to kill someone which is one of the few things I hate about the manga , look at one piece oda made readers cry about a ship , I don't mean to drag in another manga into the discussion but you get my point and personally I hate to see the final chapters filled with grave stones , tears and basically more anger
