This thread is bull****. It's just a friggin anime. Nothing is ever good enough for y'all. DBZ was an awesome anime and I've never been disappointed with it. You guys worry about stupid plots so much you can't even enjoy an anime for what it is. Everyone's a critic smh.....
whats wrong with you. everybody was Over powered and which sucked the fun out of the anime. the move sets were the same thing over and over again

I gotta say Naruto has better plots than DBZ. I wouldn't say overrated but the worst thing about DBZ is that Goku was always the hero even when others like Vegeta it their all the villain always survived

DBZ is not overrated and people should not state that DBZ is overrated. Most Anime like Naruto wouldn't of existed if it wasn't for DBZ. So what if the plot wasn't that good, as that was only the major flaw in DBZ. People can't use only that flaw against DBZ! After all that DBZ has done for the Anime world, it's ridiculous. The father of all Anime (DBZ) revolutionised the Anime world to new heights. The Anime world wouldn't off been what is was today if it wasn't for DBZ. In my opinion DBZ will always be the greatest Anime and Manga of all time.

I didn't grow up with DBZ and after watching it, I don't have this massive love for it. I enjoy it, but it's not all that it was cracked up to be. It's probably because I didn't grow up with it, who knows. I think DBZ is overrated from my view. It's good and I'm not insulting it. It's just not the best in the world in my world.

This kinda thread has been created many times, so it's a bit of a pain to have to repeat the same argument over and over.

But yes, it is very much overrated. As a story DBZ isn't all that great. The plot is very, very formulaic and repetitive, the characters aren't really developed, and the action, while fun and intense, isn't THAT much better than the kind of action you would see in any other action Shounen.

It's less that DBZ is bad and more that there are a number of series out there that are a good deal better. In terms of Shounens, Fullmetal Alchemist, Zatch Bell, and One Piece are all vastly superior to it. In terms of anime/manga overall, DBZ doesn't even come close to being one of the "Greatest stories." It's always the case that people who love DBZ the most are the ones who grew up with it. I myself watched it and loved it as a child, and at the time I thought it was the coolest thing ever. But if you look past the nostalgia and assess it on an objective basis, DBZ is a pretty average series and little more than that.

I personally would say that it isn't deserving of its popularity, but I can see WHY it's popular. It's simple, fun, and easy to get into. You don't NEED to follow 200+ episodes of story to understand it, if you've seen one DBZ episode you might as well have seen them all because most of it is the same stuff over and over. As a story that makes it weak, but for kids who come home to watch TV after a long day of school that need to unwind and watch something fun, DBZ would be the perfect thing for them.

But would I say it's one of the greatest anime of all time? Not in the least. It has a lot of influence, but that's because it has such simple, basic plot elements that it's easy for other stories to use them and to elaborate on them to make it better. DBZ is something that's easy to use elements from, but honestly it's just as easy to make a superior story. Even then, however, people say that all anime owe something to DBZ but they really don't. DBZ has a lot of influences but many stories have nothing to do with it. Code Geass, Clannad, Steins;Gate, Fate/Zero, all of those are vastly superior stories that don't share much of anything in common storywise.

I grew up with it. I am now waiting for the new movie Battle of The Gods to be made.

I don't think it's overated. I think it's a classic, it set the stone for everyone else.

DBZ is one of the best anime's, the overall story is good, Goku is one amazing character, so is Vegeta. It's overall a very very solid anime. Any one who's thinks otherwise is just hating on its popularity.

Not to mention just about everyone here watched it as a kid. DBZ FTW

The story as a story isn't really all that good. It's sufficient, but very shallow and basic. It never goes beyond bad guys invade, good guys save the world and beat them, and the good guys who died are brought back to life. Other details are added for the different arcs but this is the plot as a whole.

Goku and Vegeta aren't really amazing characters. They're certainly the most developed of the story, but their characters aren't that deep or striking. They're likeable but nothing more. If we're talking about great characters, I'm thinking more of Fate/stay characters like Rin Tohsaka and Archer, or Code Geass's Lelouch.

Hating on its popularity? It's not hating, I just feel there are series much, much better. I guess DBZ is a solid anime if you're looking for a kids' show, but in terms of anime as a whole I can't say it's "very very solid." In terms of Shounen, I look to Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, or Pandora Hearts as fantastic stories. For overall solid stories, Steins;Gate, Code Geass, and Clannad do very well.

I loved it as a kid, but that was me as a kid. It's meant for the younger audiences because it's mindless fun. But little more than that. And I know I've said this before but I don't like it when people say something is "the best" or "one of the best," most especially when it's something as simple as DBZ. It's good but nothing more than that. Newer Shounens have been influenced by it but have developed and elaborated on its trope, making better stories.

It's overrated when you get a bit older, you start noticing... It doesn't explain where the powers come from completely, where in naruto, kishi just explains perfectly how every power/jutsu/chakra/Sharingun works...

People can still dislike it and not be hating on its popularity.

I agree with that it's a solid anime. It set the mold for future ones, but people can disagree for good reasons without just simply hating.
