I think Tobirama's statements in the recent chapter proves that a strong enough emotion can awaken the MS, so it's not necessary that you kill a close person to obtain it, the psychological trauma is enough.

I dont think in a sense of "happy" emotion triggered it, if that counts, i would be alot of married uchiha guys gained it easily during any intercourse.

He said it caused a special chakra to form effecting the optic nerve thrn the sharingan activates/mutates, and the deeper the dispair the stronger the dojutsu becomes and causes said uchiha to become uncontrollable like madara.
