He is nor trying to put the world in a genjutsu because of rin, rin's death made him realise that this reality is hell and the longer you live in it the more pain that comes. It's the same with yahiko's death with nagato, nagato is was not gathering all the tailed beast to use because yahiko died he is doing it because of what yahiko's death made him realise and that is what obito told him about this reality being hell. So get your facts right.

As for him using a genjutsu to control the world, that is because he is a naive child who saw madara's moons eye plan as the best way out of things.

Your examples aren't really that good. Both Nagato and Gaara acted out big time. Gaara killed quite a few innocents and enjoyed it as well.. while Nagato slaughtered Hanzo and his relatives, and destroyed an entire village.

I do agree that Obito's backstory should've revealed more sinister moments to make his change into Tobi reasonable/acceptable, but that's not really what Kishi wishes to portray with his characters. The entire manga is about bonds and goals, gaining them and losing them. Obito lost the only bonds he had and failed his life goal, which is to protect his friends. He got confronted by the fact that Madara was right, which makes the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan suddenly sound a lot more reasonable.

The problem is peace and the shinobi world are two things that will not be able to coexist, and I'm very sure that Madara knows this. Obito has killed numerous people in hopes of being reunited with Rin with the guise of attempting to create peace. If the Infinte Tsukuyomi does actually occur there will still be deaths as the peace Obito's attempting to bring is only an illusion. Those under the effects of the genjutsu are still subject to to the harsh realities their bodies will have to face, specifically starvation and lack of nutrients. In their minds they'll believe that there living in a state of peace but on the outside their bodies are actually dying. Obito is actually doing more harm than good.
