honestly, i think that an ultimate goal is only necessary if its something that will take a long period of time or lots of hard work to achieve.
besides that, perhaps have a 5 year plan. its fine not to know what you wanna do when youre 20. some of the most interesting 40 year-olds still dont!
as for me, i have both drifted and worked hard. i wouldnt class myself as either a slacker or a workaholic, rather as someone who has the capability for both depending on his mood. i am happy with my progress so far, but not that serious about my distant future. i think life is frantic enough without thinking about the problems of tomorrow too much.
