Kotoamatsukami
The technique itself allows the user to enter the opponent's mind and manipulate them by giving them false experiences, making it seem as if they were doing things of their own free will.

So i was considering what could be one of the final twists. What if our beloved and praised double agent was infact behind the coup d'état but his memory of it is erased and replaced with "false experiences" so to speak.

Shisui told Itachi that he had tried to use Kotoamatsukami to stop the coup but Danzō Shimura stole his right eye, adamant on protecting the village his own way. FALSE?

So here is how things could have went down.

Shisui tries to stop his best friend Itachi from attacking the village and a fight breaks out. Itachi manages to injure one of Shisui's eyes in hope of avoiding Shisui superior eye techs but fails on the second eye. Shisui uses Kotoamatsukami on Itachi with the order to protect Konoha. (which later leads to the Uchiha massacre).

Itachi forgets all about the fight and his memory is replaced with just a meeting with an injured Shisui.

Shisui gives Itachi his useless eye in hope that Itachi will survive a decade for later use since he is convinced he himself wont.

The genjutsu is stuck on the last order it had before being transplanted since Itachi can't use the technquie himself.
The order goes; Itachi, protect Konoha. And just got very handy when Sasuke took Itachi's eyes.

If Sasuke gets to hear this story he is going to be all bitchy and decide that he will protect Konoha instead.

And somehow Danzo got his hands on the injured eye..

It's a cool idea you know; as far-fetched as it is. But there are a few plot holes, and I don't think Sasuke will become good that easily until he is TnJ'ed by Naruto.

An interesting idea, however it would contradict not only everything Itachi has done and his basic personality as a pacifist who witnessed war at the age of four, it would also contradict Obito's entire revelation to Sasuke about Itachi, the information Obito offered would have been false overall. Simply offering counter points ^^

Hmmm didn't Danjo took one eye and used KA on the kages summit??And didn't Itachi placed Shishuis other eye to Naruto with the crow and got activated in the fight with Nagato and Itachi??

really far-fetched, from what we've seen until now, I don't believe Itachi would be capable of something like that :x
