Kakashi is the future 'elder' of konoha, if not the Kage. He is pivotal to the village now that the others are screwed.
As for Gai, he can sacrifice himself for the sake of his comrades(8 gates). So, him dying is quite a possibility.

The only wanted them to die when they had to fight all the Tailed Beasts. And their form of death (of my choice) would be:

Gai: I have to open the 8th Gate, and die after this..
Kakashi: Okay good idea, i will use my sharingan to copy how you open up your 8th Gate, And I will do the same, and die after.
