Did the coup even have a chance to succeed?

The coup would have been the uchiha clan versus the entire leaf village, meaning against the Hyugas (Hiashi is alive, and we saw what he did vs juubi). The suratobi clan (Almost as good with Katon as uchiha are, and Hiruzen). They have the anbu, and root, and probably the remaining 40% of unknown clan ninja. They have 2 of the 3 sannin, who are both kage level and if not prime, approaching their prime. kakashi, asuma, kurenai, gai, anko and the rest of the special jonin.

Did they even have a chance, especially since the leaf was ready and had knowledge of it.

IMO it would have been the funniest rolfstomp to ever occur.

Itachi was also on the leafs side and shisui so no they didn't have a chance if the leaf and everyone supporting the leaf in the village went against the uchiha.

i think it all depends on itachi, obviously he sided with the leaf so no contest, but if he chose to lead the uchiha with obito and fugaku, i think he could have taken over. not to mention nagato konan zetsu wouldnt be far behind if obito is involved.

Itachi would only have made it much harder for the leaf, so they would still would have lost in the end.

As far as we know the uchiha clan were a bunch of fodder as none of them except for the only two who sided with the leaf had MS. That being said I would agree and say they would get chewed up and spat out

also: if they would stage a coup they would do it in silent to kill the village elders/Hokage = to take controle over the highest positions

i duno man imo 1v1 the uchiha have the edge simply because, even if the leaf is expecting the attack they wont know when or how so thats a big advantege for uchiha. the base sharingan can read movement and jutsu, and while im sure the uchiha were outnumbered, itachi would give trouble to hiruzen and who ever is with him and obito and nagato would give trouble to any other top rank shinobi and then the uchiha police handle the fodder. the only part i question is itachis stamina but at that time im sure it wasnt a problem and his susanoo is invincible lol even hiruzen and jiraiya together couldnt take itachis susanoo imo.
