I think Sasuke's "selfishness" is a tad too inflated. Even Naruto admit that he could have easily taken the same path Sasuke did. This is one example:

I don't think it's inflated. Naruto COULD have taken the same path, but he didn't. Why? Because he realzied how selfish and evil a path of vengeance can be. I sympathize with Sasuke, but he handled his problems the wrong way. He handled them selfishly.

Well it depends on how you interpret his words. IMO Kishi is trying to say that if Naruto was in Sasuke's shoes he would have taken his path. The idea behind Naruto and Sasuke's argument at the VoTE was basically Naruto saying that he always knew that Sasuke felt pain just as he did, but Sasuke countered him by saying his pain was even greater since he had his entire family and bonds taken away with him while Naruto never actually felt the pain of losing somebody like that.

That makes way for their confrontation at the bridge. Naruto just went through the Pain arc and learned about true pain (the strongest example here being Jiraiya's death). Now he knows what Sasuke is talking about unlike before, and that's why he knows why Sasuke's will is so strong and why it'll be near impossible for him to come back: because he would have done the same thing.

So it's basically how you decide to read the manga. Basically I believe Sasuke felt extreme pain because his loved ones were taken away from him, while Naruto was born with the pain of being a host but grew better over time because of his ties to his friends (Iruka for example). They're opposites in that regard, which is probably what Kishimoto wanted to show.

It's a very vulgar way of putting it. If you knew he was wrong, why even bother sinking to his level?

Very true, but people often think their own pain is worse than others. I don't mean to belittle Sasuke or say his pain was less, but I still think he chose the self-gratifying method of dealing with his pain. I think he is wrong in that regard no matter how much pain he has been through. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who wants this, but I truly hope that Sasuke realizes the error of his ways and becomes good again. I'm not saying that is likely whatsoever, but I really hope that's what happens. Sasuke deserves to die a hero, despite all he's done; he dosen't deserve to die a villain.

Personally one of my favorite scenarios is that Sasuke becomes possessed by Orochimaru but is later defeated by Naruto and Sasuke gets his body back. He then actually defeats Naruto (he's pretty beat up though, he's only just conscious while Naruto is knocked out) but decides to spare him and sees the error of his ways. Later Naruto helps him return to the Leaf Village but he ends up banished. Sasuke accepts his role and promises to Naruto that he'll always protect Naruto from the shadows. I guess for pairing wars sake Sakura can fake an attack on Naruto to get herself banished and live with Sasuke elsewhere while Naruto becomes the Alliance's leader. I don't want a overly happy ending to be honest xd

But yeah there's also 2 main ways you can read manga like this: from the manga's perspective or from your own perspective. For example many complain that Naruto's FRS feint against an experienced tactician like Kakuzu was stupid. To an extent I agree with them. This would be their perspective. From the manga's perspective, Kishimoto is just trying to show that Naruto has become an amazing battle specialist mentally as well as physically.
