Once doubled up, they bounce like popcorns (when they're baked) and land somewhere around the opponent again, to repeat the process. The entire process continues till the matter multiplies from 2 to 32 which produces enough explosion and fire power to destroy/burn down huge summons and incinerate them. However, if the popcorn is shot directly at the opponent, it will only cause minor damage (C-Rank) as compared to the full effect. Should the initial matter hit a water source (above C-Rank) it would be extinguished.
