Maybe you can achieve rinnegan without senju DNA but need it to stay alive. Madara loss to hashirama because(in my theorie rinnegan damages people if they don't have have senju cells)the rinnegan damaged him drasticly so tobi saved him and killed hashirama knowing he was weak from battling...
