A man was once sentenced to 25 years of hard labor. His hands were chained to the handle of a great wheel that was set into a wall, and, for many hours each day, he had to turn this massive wheel. He would often wonder what he was accomplishing. Perhaps the wheel turned a grindstone in a flour mill, or perhaps he was generating energy that was being converted for some purpose. When his sentence was expired and the shackles were removed, the man, broken both in body and spirit, immediately ran to the other side of the wall. To his horror, there was nothing there! He collapsed with bitter disappointment and a broken heart. Our greatest need is to have purpose, to know what we are doing in this world.
