Nonetheless, Deidara airbound would do damage, but ultimately fail eventually. Unless he uses c4 constantly and huge bombs hidden some distance away.

Well basically the best he can really do is what you said, walk in, and blow himself up. Thats the only way he'll take out konoha.

he could probably use it multiple times from different ends of the village, remember c4 (i think it was c4) it spreads airbound and isnt visable to the eye (doujutsu users could see it) and instantly kills anyone who inhales it. This whole with a few set of birds from a distance would allow him to really damage the village, not defeat it though.
