I've been seeing that people have been giving one sided arguments about how Jiraiya is stronger than(or equal to) Itachi. The time has come to end this nonsense, once and for all.
Firstly, the databook.
People say that Jiraiya = Itachi just because they share the same stat total in the third databook. If things could be analysed like this, we could say that Orochimaru = Tsunade because they share the same stat total, i.e, 35. However, the fact is that in a one on one all out match, Oro would defeat Tsunade.
The databook also says that Deidara's intelligence is 4.5, which is higher that Sasuke's 3.5 . After watching the fight between the two of them, anyone who is non - biased will conclude that Sasuke is more intelligent than Deidara. Here, Kishi has contradicted his databook with his Manga.
The databook is currently obsolete and needs to be updated.
Finally, databook stats don't mean much in an actual battle, and they can't be used as arguments.
Itachi's meeting with Jiraiya:
Itachi never intended to kill Jiraiya, his main intention was to show Danzo that he was still alive, and maybe to re-instill hatred into Sasuke. When he told Kisame that he would "Tie with Jiraiya", he didn't actually mean it. If Itachi hadn't said that, Kisame would have become suspicious as to why Itachi didn't fight Jiraiya when he could have won.
Itachi never wanted to kill Konoha shinobi without reason, especially Jiraiya( as Jiraiya was the strongest one alive). He also knew that his eyesight would deteriorate further and he would become blind sooner than anticipated, if he were to battle Jiraiya. By then Itachi had already done what he came to Konoha to do, i.e, warn Danzo(indirectly, through Kakashi, Asuma and Kurenai).
He had also fulfilled his secondary objective, which was to make Sasuke go through all that mental trauma so that his hatred would resurface. As he(Itachi) had done all that, there was no reason for him to stay there and tire himself out by battling Jiraiya, which is why he thought of an excuse to get away without making anyone feel suspicious.
FAQs with regard to Itachi's Konoha visit:
1. Why didn't Itachi say anything when Kisame was about to chop Naruto's legs off?
answer : Itachi didn't care about Naruto back then. In Itachi's view, Naruto was nothing more than an ordinary Jinchuuriki. Itachi's main concern was Sasuke, and not Naruto.
2. Why did he order Kakashi's murder?
answer: Itachi tried all he could to avoid fighting, but Kakashi started speaking about confidential Akatsuki matters. Initially, Itachi may have said that they were going to "dispose of the other two and take Kakashi with them", but then he changed his mind and told Kisame that they didn't want to attract any unnecessary attention.
Ways by which Itachi can defeat Jiraiya:
1. Amaterasu : Jiraiya isn't fast enough to evade Amaterasu, even in sage mode. A could dodge it only because he had enhanced his reflexes with raiton armor. This isn't the case with Jiraiya. Jiraiya can seal it, but it takes a lot of time for him to do so, and he can't do it in the middle of battle.
2. Tsukuyomi and other genjutsu : Tsukuyomi would one - shot Jiraiya, no explanations needed. If Itachi wanted to kill Jiraiya, he could've put him under genjutsu while they were talking( as he did with Deidara). Itachi put Oro under his paralysis genjutsu, and he could've done the same thing to Jiraiya.
Jiraiya would have been able to break out of it of course, but the time taken to do so would give Itachi an opening to kill Jiraiya.
3. Susanoo : None of Jiraiya's attacks can do anything to it. It even provides Itachi with Yata mirror, Yasaka's Magatama and Totsuka blade.
4. Sage Mode : It takes a lot of time for Jiraiya to enter SM, and he can't even move his hands until then.
5. Sound Genjutsu : The sharingan can resist genjutsu. Even if the sharingan couldn't help Itachi with sound genjutsu, Jiraiya won't be able to enter SM and cast the genjutsu as it takes a lot of time to cast.
6. Summonings : Jiraiya's toads will be sacrificed to Totsuka. Itachi can also control them with his sharingan, as Sasuke did with Manda.
DBZ Logic :
I'm including it because there are few people who follow this. Ignore it if you want.
Jiraiya = Orochimaru (They were rivals)
Itachi > Orochimaru
Thus, Itachi > Jiraiya
Symbolism :
Once again, I'm saying this to people who follow this logic. Ignore this if you want.
Snake > Toad (meaning that Oro > Jiraiya)
Itachi > Oro.
Thus, Itachi >> Jiraiya.
Personally, I don't believe in DBZ logic and symbolism.
Conclusion : Itachi wins with mid difficulty.
What's your opinion?
