Straight after reading the current chapter. I am amazed how far Naruto has come. I am pretty sure he remember his encounter with Nagato outer path and how he tried to control his through the rod.
Naruto cleverly went in sage mode to detect the KM clone standing outside to locate the rod from the inside and knock it out. If you ask me that Kage level thinking.
Not to even mention his Tajuu Kage bunshin jutsu idea. He was in a very tough position but to have come up with that idea is truly great. Except the fact it's a bit clumsy way of getting himself out.

One more thought propped up on my mind is that. Do you have to been in possession of Rinnengan to preform those evil chakra chains? If yes, I cannot remember Nagato ever resorting to it.

He has indeed come a long way. His intelligence outmatches even the smartest of monkeys now D:

And I don't think you need the Rinnegan to perform the chains. Kushina had them, too. It'll be elaborated on later like every technique that just pops up.

It seems to me that he actuallly gets smarter in sage mode.First the third raikage and now this? Almost like he leaves the animal instincts home with the RM.

They were?
I'll read over those chapters again. But Kushina did enforce those chains within Naruto's subconscious.

Tobi, on the other hand, is using them in the real world. Speaking of which, Tobi also used chains while fighting Minato, right? Maybe this is an upgrade of that...

...or those could just be normal, iron chains xD

Not a genius all the time, but he has his "genius" moments.

polt no jutsu is the only reason he's gotten better. Naruto would have to be twice as smart to be a half-wit.

Genius? Hmmmm ... he has his moments. I would say he is smart 70% of the time, Genius 10% of the time, and a total idiot 20% of the time. :D

Naruto is clever in battle and I think the breakdown you listed there is totally accurate. He has those genius moments but twice as often he has total idiot moments.

He is not a Genius in the sense of neji or sauske but he is a product of hard work and the will to not give up.....and an idiot at times
