Why can’t people say America isn’t Great?

I agree with him. Ideals are not enough to say something is great: action, physical evidence, 100% everyone included in the spoils.

Well. That has never been the United States.

So why are people in the left and right attacking him?

So honesty isn’t allowed??

America uses it's "greatness" as a means to try and impose their will on the people's of the world. Anybody who challenges that gets sanctioned and or bombed into submission. If Americans stop believing American is great the government loses it's legitimacy and ability to impose it's world view upon the world.

However this won't last indefinitely, currently the US is the empire of debt surviving purely because of artificially low interest rates and reserve currency status. Any other nation in it's position would've imploded long ago and once reserve status no longer exists(people realise they're not going to get paid back) it's pretty much checkmate at that point.

Everyone subconsciously knows the real reason why people can get away with talking down to America. If America was as shitty as everyone bitched about, the powers that be would be on damage control. It wouldn't be politically correct, it wouldn't be "nice". I don't know if America is better or worse than other countries, it depends on what you like, you can't do a pride festival in russia apperently without being taken by the police, but I'm sure people prefer russia over the US.
Some people may like America, some people may find it hard to live there cus they can't afford healthcare or education so they would prefer other countries, it all depends.
I'm sure Trump has made people lose respect as well, climate deniers and threats of nuclear warfare doens't do positive things either.

China is easily safer than the United States and so is North Korea, thoses are two countries that I visited myself and are way more different than what the medias wants you to believe.
