The only way Naruto could beat Pain alone is actually in BSM. So there really isn't any true downplay thinking that he can't beat Pain without Kurama, still, his performance was legit.

Just reminding everyone that Pain never had the intention of killing Naruto. And even then Pain was still superior to Naruto and claimed he was going to make a bigger Chibaku Tensei but Minato stepped in and healed Naruto. So yeah dat Pain!

Everyone knows Itachi>Sasuke. Pain>Naruto. But they DID defeat them under the circumstances and disadvantages of their enemies.

People sometimes discredit what Naruto did alone without the Kyuubi's help. For instance, Naruto took out a majority of the Pain's without using the Kyuubi's power.

Actually what people discredit is the fact that Nagato already expended much chakra before Naruto even returned to the village. He invaded, was using various jutsu from each of the Pein Rikudo and then had to channel enormous amounts of chakra into Deva enabling him to destroy the village and added to that; he was burdened with the task of trying to capture Naruto without actually killing him which all made Naruto's accomplishments very possible.

I know. I made note that even though Naruto fought Nagato with his disadvantages, he still performed pretty well.

Either way, Naruto needed the Kyuubi overall because he was going to be captured, and because Pain at that time was at a disadvantage, which meant Naruto could take out as many as he could before his real powers returned.

...Because of those disadvantages. In an actual fight with killing intent, SM Naruto would never destroy any of the Pein's because Deva would solo. I agree that his performance was decent tho. ​

Despite the fact that Pain had used up a lot of chakra, was fighting solely to capture Naruto, and Deva Path's abilities were restricted.

He more accurately defeated 5 Paths against a nerfed Pain before having to rely on Kurama.

I agree at the time Naruto couldn't defeat a 100% Pain. However Kurama didn't defeat pain, Naruto did. I'm sure KCM Naruto would beat Pain at 100% though.

Now Pain was fighting Naruto without killing intent, if he fought with killing intent, Naruto would've most likely died.
Same thing with Sasuke in all the fights with Naruto. If Naruto fought all of his fights with killing intent against Sasuke, Sasuke also would've most likely died.
