Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has called on Bill Gates and other technology figureheads to "close up" the internet. Trump believes this would help prevent Islamic State (Isis) from recruiting Americans.

Speaking at a campaign rally at the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in South Carolina on 7 December, Trump said he believed that "closing that internet up in some ways" would prevent acts of domestic terrorism in the US. During the same speech, Trump demanded that the US shut its borders to all Muslims.

Trump said: "We're losing a lot of people because of the internet. We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain cases, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people."

It is not clear if Trump wants to censor the internet, clamp down on websites and communication networks run by IS (Daesh), or if he lacks a basic understanding of how the internet works. Trump's vision for a closed internet went down well with the crowd of 500 supporters, who cheered him on.

Later in the day, Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos tweeted to suggest that he send Trump into space on the company's Blue Origin rocket, presumably with a one-way ticket. Trump had earlier criticised Bezos's ownership of the Washington Post newspaper, claiming he bought it "for purposes of keeping taxes down at his no profit company, Amazon".

Censor internet when it comes down to Jihadist propaganda is a good thing but close it down more than that is taking away freedom. We already only see 1% of the internet now. The other 99% is on the deepweb where you can find Nazi experiments, child porn, snuff films, buy weapons and drugs etc. We shouldn't censor our internet more than we have only if it will have a positive effect and I'm not sure if this will.

The thing about Donald Trump is that he is showing the true color of America! Trump had done so many things that should've destroyed his campaign, but he is still rising. Trump's popularity is the result of dumb people and dishonest media.

He seems to be very honest at what he intends to do, most others are sneaky politicians who do not say anything against popular opinions and smile at camera. How will he win, is he there just try to become news head line?

Usually when a rogue candidate achieves popularity, it only serves to solidify the two major political parties in the US.

The Republicans will take his more palatable ideas to heart so that their candidate has a chance of winning in 2016.

Come on, now. Don't diss a nation or group because a leader is an idiot or a liar. I mean, honestly: do you really think an honest man can ever make it to the white house or the capitol of any major country? Of coarse not. People get approval by saying what people want to hear--especially Donald Trump. It's why I have no sense of trust for any politician but I don't see it wise to flame people who have nothing to do with his/her decision(s).

Any complaint a person can come up with for an individual of any country is a trait you will find in almost all others. Some are just more open about it and/or focused on by the media for a "hot story" or major complaint.
