The standard is WAY different now. Previously, MS was as serious power. Now, MS is a toy. There is a big difference in Kishi's writing and thinking then and now. With the massive boom of powers in the manga, nowadays kids also have similarly upped power handouts. You can't call Boruto a Itachi level prodigy because this isn't relative.
Don't really see how the standards have changed, MS is a serious power. If you are comparing it to Rikudou-type characters, I understand, but they don't even make up 20% of the Naruto population (character wise). If you were referring to Shin's, their man made MS Sharingan is pretty pathetic compared to what we've seen through Sasuke, Itachi, Obito, and even Shisui.
Read what I wrote, I said that we haven't seen this much talent bar Itachi. It isn't a direct comparison to just Itachi, it's a direct comparison to every single talented kid in this Manga in comparison to what he has shown. And that's not really true either. The only thing that has changed for the newer generation especially is access to techniques they didn't have before early on.
I'll explain this through Sarada. If Sakura had a mother who was also skilled in CES, Sakura would of been capable of using it early on as well. Even Tsunade explained that she had not seen this talent since Shizune before Part 1 ended (referring to Sakura). In the rest of the generation's case, they get to learn things much easier due to their surroundings (families). But this example stops for people who grew up without families, or parents to teach them up until this point. Biggest example there being Naruto himself. In Bolt's case, he was never really interested in 'shinobi' like things anyway, even going as far as not to work hard or take training seriously either. Which is a big problem for his character which the movie fleshed out.
In Boruto's case, Konohamaru taught him the Rasengan, and Sasuke taught him how to utilize shuriken jutsu. I'll leave his Taijutsu blank due to the fact that we don't know how exactly he learned it. Then you factor in what he supposedly has learned by himself:
- Capable of utilizing; Fuuton, Raiton, and Suiton
- Applied an elemental nature to his Rasengan
- Learned the Kage Bunshin technique (max 3) without training, he later than trained for four being the max currently.
^This is what he learned all by himself. Without help, or guidance.
What I'm leaving out is how fast he learned through guidance, despite Konohamaru teaching him how to use the Rasengan without really explaining it:
