I think Orochimaru became alot stronger over the past 12 years, but he's not above Naruto and Sasuke.

Orochimaru saw his perfect dream world when he was in the Infinite Tsukuyomi so i think for the past 12 + years he's been working on making his dream into reality,and is starting his plan to take out Naruto,and Sasuke now, hence Gaiden.
