I think its pretty clear Zoro and Luffy have a bond different to the the other strawhats he is the first cremate for a reason Oda makes no mistakes. Also Luffy is confident in Zoro's abilities above all the other straw hats. Luffy see's someone strong and Zoro says he will handle luffy says "I knw he wont lose Zoro is strong" .

I won't say best friend. The closest to his best friend is maybe Usopp. They have the strongest partnership though, a captain/vice-captain relationship, hence he is the one supporting him in his role as the captain of the ship, more than anyone else

He's the closest to him for sure. I mean he's the one that understands him the most and most loyal to him when compared to other crew members. And for Luffy, he holds same level of value for all of them but holds more faith in Zoro's strength than he does in case of others.


A part from playing around with Luffy, Usopp holds no trait to be considered as Luffy's best friend. In fact he's the one that failed to understand Luffy's feelings in case of Sunny and vice versa. Usopp went ahead and even insulted Luffy by implying that he won't follow someone like Luffy or something along these lines. True feelings would come out during this kind of fights in other words deep inside his heart Usopp holds some kind of ill feelings towards Luffy. Same goes for Luffy, he tried to expel him from crew without a second thought just because he went against his decision.

So I am not sure about how they can be best friends without having obvious understanding of each others feelings.

He holds all Strawhats as incredibly close nakama, and in that regard Zoro is hardly above anybody else. He trusts Zoro the most due to his strength, with Sanji second etc. BUT his best friend is between Chopper and Usopp as they're very similar and childish and goof around a lot more.

Although I think Sabo and Ace count as his closest friends.

The main reason I'd say he's closest with Usopp is because we actually see Luffy and Usopp together. They interact outside of battle or getting on a new island. Usopp is the one he spends the most time with and interacts the most with, so he's the one he's gonna be closest to.

I wasn't talking about their relationship specifically, but the development of relationships in general in the series are subpar at best.

No, different show does matter. Different shows, different styles, different intentions of the authors. You can't go "Well Kishi does this with his writing, so Oda may be doing the same."

It's not just about goofing around, it's about interacting with. Zoro hasn't shown any more understanding of Luffy than any of the other Strawhats, and Luffy hasn't shown more trust in Zoro than he has any of the other Strawhats. He spends the most time with Usopp, which means more bonding than with someone who barely speaks to you and spends most of his time training in isolation or asleep.

The page with Burgess/Luffy and Zoro's reaction means absolutely nothing in terms of their bond. They are both simply people who enjoy fighting, so when they hear about someone who is supposed to be a fighting champion, their first instinct is to fight. Luffy and Law has the exact same reaction when Kidd told them he'd fight in their stead, I suppose they were best friends in Sabaody too, eh?

Luffy and Zoro scoffing at the idea that the other was defeated isn't special either. "Luffy won't die."-Usopp in Alabasta Arc. The fact that Luffy lets the others go off and fight on their own is proof enough that he has the same faith in them that he does Zoro.[
