But he doesnt know that place is connected to a cave which link to amekagure lake.
He tried to discover the place but it collapses during the discovery and he fell down to bottom of an inner cave and staying unconscious.

Note. When jiraiya died, he is still in sage mode. He didnt able to surpress the nature chakra back then, so he turned into a frog like gamabutan.
