I work with cutters all day and I've heard every reason or excuse. Despite what philosophy they give you it boils down to a few things:
1. They are angry. People, especially teens, display anger when they are depressed. Sometimes those emotions get turned inwards and they start to loath themselves. If this is the case help decrease the anger and depression. Let them talk and process their emotions in dialogue not outbursts or self harm behaviors.
2. They feel their lives are out of control. Like bulimia or anorexia, cutting is something that can be controlled only by the person doing the action. This can be fixed by helping them take more control of their life (even though control is basically an illusion for everyone).
3. They are getting a high from the endorphin release. Cutting releases endorphins which is like your bodies natural opiate to counter physical pain. Some get addicted to the high. This is the rarest of the reasons. It is treated like any substance abuse; help them fill the whole that they are filling with the drug.

Either way, if you have concerned caring parents they should know. Your sibling might be mad at you, but its to keep him safe. Those scars last forever, long after he's gotten healthier. He may need therapy and psychiatric medication to get through it.

If he's cutting vertical on his wrists, it's a legit suicide attempt. Doctors can stitch up the former, not the latter.

We can't tell you how to handle the situation because we don't know your family dynamic. Cutting, though a poor coping mechanism, is rarely life threatening. Talking to him would be the best gauge of whether it is cutting to cope or building up courage to attempt suicide. He will probably need counseling to help him go through whatever it is he is going through, which depending on his age, will probably involve parental involvement/finances. It's your job to just support him.

I agree, this forum is a fine place to voice these questions because confidentiality is pretty secure. Just be judicial in what advice you follow through with or information you receive.

That's interesting, but not really true. Horizontal cuts are very seldom attention seeking. Abnormal attention seeking behaviors carry a large stigma as well. The only time cutting behaviors are attention seeking is when used as a manipulative device (commonly practice by people with personality disorders: Borderline and Antisocial primarly). Most cutters hide their cuts and tools. The process even becomes more of a ritual as it continues. Usually when children begin cutting they aren't as careful hiding it. Cutting for the endorphin high is a relatively small percentage of those who cut. I agree though, "loling" at this seems pretty insensitive.

Dude it's anonymous and didn't use his brother's name and he uses a persona here. There are anonymous advice columns in every newspaper. If it was wrong there wouldn't be such a thing since the advice columns usually address how to deal with things tactfully.

Try to find the cause of this immense stress that pushed him to cut. People usually cut themselves as a sort of release from what's going on in their lives. If you can find the cause you could release him from this cutting.
