Respect isn't something that's handed out willy-nilly, it's earned.

That's cultural. I was always taught to be respectful toward elders.

OT: I'm in my 30's. When I first started reading manga they didn't have English translation; it was all katakana and kanji. I don't think anime and manga have an age requirement. I will say that the type of anime and manga I read is different. I read Naruto because there is a strong message and a good philosophy behind it. I still have friends my age that go to conventions and cosplay. If it is something you enjoy, and it doesn't hurt people, why stop?

It's one thing to be polite, and another to give respect.

I'll be polite to any stranger, regardless of status. But respect is valuable, it should only be handed out if you know the person is actually deserving of respect. Hand it out willy-nilly and you could find yourself respecting a Nazi fanatic or a rapist.

True it must be earned and some expect it because they're older or in a higher status but what truly matters is ones behavior and if it can't define someone ( as of my experience some people may look rude but they're truly good and respectable people and it's same other way around) then who they truly are .

Trust me, much older people are happily reading manga and plan to continue until they are on there cloud strumming on there harp...I would just like to state, I AM NOT THAT OLD, I know of at least one member older than me....:T_T:

Manga and anime transcend age barriers because they're meant to - in US, adult comics/cartoons are uncommon and usually have excessive profanity and trashy/sexual themes.

Shonen manga in particular has themes of good vs evil, hard work, friendship - these are universal themes also found in other very popular literature (LoTR, Harry Potter)

Is it really that offensive to teens/young adults that people older than you happen to have good taste?
