^This explains it nicely. There's a lot to like about him. To me he wasn't just one of those happy go lucky easy to like characters who are always happy about everything and try to project it towards everyone. It seems typical of the ones on the Yang side of the parallel (Naruto/Sasuke, Obito/Kakashi, Hashirama/Madara) to be extremely outgoing and not being entirely realistic about things going on, but Jiraiya was... different. A by-product of his own power that he developed for the most part on his own besides inheriting his student's jutsu. Jiraiya was perverted, happy, calm and everything in between. But he was realistic. And when you combine his light hearted characteristics with his realistic approach to the serious things in the manga, he's extremely easy to like. At the time I'm writing this I think I'm convincing myself to put Jiraiya in my top 5 for favourites at this point.
Well, he has haters just as any other character does. They just aren't as vocal and aggressive as ones other characters have. Which is how people get the impression that he doesn't have an "anti" fandom... when in reality he does and it's a sizeable amount of people actually.I don't, I dislike his character.
damn, you summed it up pretty well. He violated the three taboos of a shinobi which would make most people look like complete scumbags but everyone he encountered looked up to him with a certain respect. There's a lot to like about him.
